You are not broken – You were just never taught
how to mother yourself.
We didn't need "bad" parents to end up feeling under-mothered. In a world that prizes independence and isolation, most of us missed out on the layered, communal care that humans evolved to need. We grew up learning to push through — not pause, not receive, not ask.
So now the inner critic fills the silence. It speaks before you can. It tells you your needs are too much, your desires are selfish, your longing for belonging is weakness.
"The goal isn't to silence the critic — it's to grow an Inner Mother so present, so warm, so reliable, that the critic no longer runs the show."
That's what this workbook is for. Not therapy. Not fixing. A map and a compass for the journey of building that inner presence — rooted in nature's own wisdom.
This workbook is for you if…
You're tired of fighting yourself just to ask for what you need
You give generously to others but it somehow doesn't feel right asking the same for yourself
You want to tend to your inner child without it feeling overwhelming or strange
You're drawn to nature as a source of wisdom and grounding
GIFT: Renewal
Sun and Moon Mother
She holds the cycles and rhythms — the deep nourishment of ritual, repetition, and honoring the flow of time. She teaches us how to rest and return.
gift: trust
Wind Mother
Whimsical, visionary, ever-moving. She calls us toward new beginnings and teaches us to trust the unfolding of life, even when we can't see the path ahead.
GIFT: Boundaries
Desert Mother
Resilient and self-determined, she knows that clear boundaries are not walls but roots. She shows us how to protect what we value without losing ourselves.
GIFT: solitude
Island Mother
She reclaims her own space and time. In stillness, she cultivates self-knowledge — and the radical kindness of treating yourself as gently as you treat others.
gift: presence
Mountain Mother
Solid, stable, and deeply present. She is the safe harbor for our tenderest parts. She listens without judgment and holds us when we most need to feel accepted.
GIFT: purpose
River Mother
Always moving, values-driven, purposeful. She knows where she's going and why. She helps us clarify our vision so we can be pulled forward by desire, not pushed by fear.
GIFT: belonging
Forest Mother
She understands that we are made for connection — the way trees share nutrients through hidden root networks. She heals our social wounding and invites us into genuine belonging, not mere conformity.
GIFT: spirituality
Ocean Mother
The vast, deep, circulating whole. She holds the full arc of our lives and our longing for something greater. She is the pause, the breath, the hand on the heart that reminds us — we are held by more than we can see.

AUTHOR AND CREATOR: LANDSCAPE OF MOTHERS
Jill Doneen Clifton
I am a teacher, writer, and nature-based guide who has spent years working with women to help them uncover and grow their own inner resources. Her work blends depth psychology, somatic awareness, and the living wisdom of natural systems.
Landscape of Mothers grew from my work in ecology and my deep conviction that we are not broken — we are simply under-mothered in a world that forgot what community care looks like. The archetypes are the map back to a culture of care.
"Relating these archetypes to nature, we engage with the soothing and helpful aspects of natural systems. Nature helps us self-soothe, slow down, and puts our nervous system in a state in which we can respond appropriately to our needs and the needs of others."
